April Book Haul ~ Week 2

Here are the books I got this week:

I'm pretty excited about Welcome to the World Baby Girl. I haven't read a Fannie Flagg book yet, and I don't remember seeing one on sale before. I've had my eye on Eight Hundred Grapes for a while. It looks like a fun summer read.  I've also wanted to read Funny in Farsi for a long time. I've heard it's hysterical, and The Deliberate Reader has it as one of her book club picks. 

I won This Time Around in a Goodreads giveaway. It's not my usual genre, but I'll give it a try. An Awakened Heart is a free novella to introduce Jody Hedlund's new series, and Crimes Against a Book Club was my Kindle First pick for this month.

I don't know if I can pick a favorite this month. I love Karen White's vintage cover. I kind of want that bathing suit for this summer. Cynthia Rushti's cover is beautiful, and really makes me want to find out how it connects to the story. Which one is your favorite? Let me know in the comments.

Book Review~ A Secret Courage by Tricia Goyer

A Secret Courage

I really enjoyed this World War 2 romance. I loved the setting and the characters. It dealt with the Women's Auxiliary Air Force, which I didn't know anything about. There is always something new to learn about this time period. There is also an interesting spy angle that added a lot of intrigue to the story.

Emma, the main character, has a lot of admirable qualities. She's very brave and loyal. She is always willing to do her part in the war effort. She is motivated by the death of her brother, and is still dealing with her grief. Will is a perfect love interest. He has secrets, but he doesn't let that stand in the way of his feelings for Emma. He is constantly torn between his job and his love for her. I enjoyed watching their love story unfold.

If you enjoy WW2 fiction, I would recommend this book to you. It is a nice break from some of the heavier subject matter of this time period, but is still rich in history.

March Wrap Up

Here are the books I read in March.

The War that Saved My Life

This was a Modern Mrs. Darcy flight pick for the month of March. It was a sweet story about a handicapped girl and her brother that are relocated during the blitz. It deals with some heavy themes in a very tender way. Great for middle grade children and adults.

The Illusionist's Apprentice

I loved this historical fiction about a woman who apprenticed under Harry Houdini. I did a full review here.

A Bridge Across the Ocean

I have mixed feelings about this one. Susan Meissner is hands down my favorite author, but I just don't like ghost stories. That being said, this book kept my interest the whole time, and I loved the WW2 war bride story. Not my favorite, but still a good book.

Troublemaker

I read this one for the juicy memoir category in the Modern Mrs. Darcy reading challenge, and let me tell you, it was juicy! Beware that there is a lot of profanity, but if you want to read a tell all about Scientology, this will do it for you. I found Leah to be very honest, and I hope she continues to  succeed in her acting now that she has left the church. I'm hoping to catch some of her series about people who have left Scientology.

I have already read To the Farthest Shores. It was very enjoyable. You can read my review here.

I hope they keep putting the Chief Inspector Gamache books on sale. I think I have the first four now. I heard that number four is when the series really hits its stride. We'll see.

My pastor is always recommending Tim Keller's books, so I was excited to see this one go on sale. It will also fit nicely into my Modern Mrs. Darcy reading challenge.
