Book Review ~ A Lesson in Love and Murder by Rachel Mcmillan

A Lesson in Love and Murder is the second book in the Herringford and Watts Mysteries series. I am really enjoying these books. The characters are fun and witty. The mystery tends to come in second to the character development, and I love the turn of the century Toronto setting. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical mysteries with great characters.

Book Review ~ A Heart Most Certain by Melissa Jagears

Although set in the 1800's, A Heart Most Certain tackles some very relevant topics. Hypocrisy, human trafficking, poverty and the roll of the church in the community are all discussed in this book. I found it very convicting and beautifully told.

The main characters are well developed and have good chemistry. They are both a little uptight in the beginning, but they grew on me quickly as I got to know them. They both had underlying motives that pulled them apart in the beginning, so there were lots of misunderstandings along the way. 

This is a fairly long book, and the subject matter is a bit heavy in places. I wouldn't recommend it if you are in the mood for something light. But if you are in the mood for something that goes deeper, this is a great book.

Book Haul ~ September

I got a boat load of books this month. There were some really great sales last month, and I took advantage of them. I also won a give away during Bout of Books which was really nice. Here are the most recent additions to my library.

I've already read The Lady and the Lion Heart. It was very good. Vain Empires looks really good, so I want read that one fairly soon. I'm probably going to save The Whiskey Sea for winter. It looks like a cold weather book. If you've read any of these, let me know in the comments.

Why am I waiting? I've really been enjoying this historical romance series. The characters are memorable and the stories are oh so romantic.

Top Ten Tuesday ~ Back to School

I have been home schooling for a very long time. I've graduated two students and my third is starting high school. I love making may own schedule and planning curriculum around my individual child's needs.

When we were doing elementary school, I used a literature based curriculum called Five in a Row. It used picture books to teach all the basic subjects. My kids all love to read, and I attribute that to this amazing program. Here are some of our favorite books.

Book Review ~ Disillusioned by Christy Barrit

Disillusioned

Even though this isn't my usual kind of read, I really enjoyed this romantic suspense novel. There was lots of action and good chemistry between the main characters. If you like books by Irene Hannon or Terri Blackstock, you should give this book a try. This was such a short book, but it was packed with twists and turns. Lots of fun and perfect for the end of summer.
