June Wrap Up

I'm linking up with Modern Mrs. Darcy to share the books I've been reading in June.

The Great Alone
The Great Alone
This was a hard book to read, but so worth it! It was the Modern Mrs. Darcy Book Club pick for June. The club was fairly split. A lot of people thought it was melodramatic, and a lot of people loved it. I fell into the second category. I thought it was a fantastic look at a dysfunctional family trying so hard to save itself only to make things worse. Parts of it are sad and bleak, but ultimately it shows that the hope is in the next generation breaking the cycle. Highly recommended!

Dreams of Falling
Dreams of Falling
I had been looking forward to reading this book all year. Karen White writes consistently good split time novels. This book was no exception, although the first half moved a little slower than I would have liked. I enjoyed the historical plot line more than the contemporary one, but they were both good. It wasn't a perfect novel, but I enjoyed it and would recommend it without hesitation.

The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck
The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck
This was a great palate cleanser after a couple of heavier book. This book read like a rom-com. It was a lot of fun, and an interesting look at Christian culture. The main character is converted to Christianity after becoming a famous romance writer. She has to figure out how to fit her work and her faith together. Then she falls in love with her pastor. It gets complicated real quick. If you like edgier Christian fiction, you should give this a try.

Hurricane Season
Hurricane Season
This was a really lovely book about sisterly relationships. I loved the deep south, modern farm setting. It's a great summer read.

Sons of Blackbird Mountain (Blackbird Mountain, #1)
Sons of Blackbird Mountain
This historical romance is sweet and atmospheric. I loved the Appalachian setting. The main character, Aven, was strong and kind even though her life had been difficult. The story had some interesting subplots including American Sign Language and making moonshine. It was a fascinating read with a beautiful love story. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book from Thomas Nelson through Netgalley for the purpose of review.

"Aven peered down at the letter again, noted the address written in Aunt Dorothe's hand, then looked back to the wooden sign that was staked into the ground."
