Why I'm waiting: I loved Dear Mr. Knightly, the first book by Katherine Reay. I am hoping this one will be just as good. Plus, I love the cover.

What new books have you gotten lately?

Book review: Thief of Glory by Sigmund Brower

 I have mixed feelings about this WW2 era novel. The writing is beautiful and the story is set in the Dutch East Indies, which is a part of the war that I haven't read about in previous books. The author did a wonderful job of foreshadowing the story and developing the characters, particularly the main character Jeremiah. While Jeremiah wasn't a particularly likeable character, I was definately rooting for him. I really wanted him to expirience some happiness and get some peace. Most of the story is set in a concentration camp. All of the Dutch women and children are taken there after the men and older boys are taken away to work camps. Jeremiah is the oldest child left in his family, and he takes his role as provider very seriously.

This book is very hard to read. The descriptions of the conditions don't hold anything back. They are brutal and sad. If you are sensitive at all, I would not recommend this book. Also, I feel the love story is stressed a lot on the back of the book, but it really isn't a focal point of the main story. It is really a coming of age story. A very sad one.

 I would recommend this book to fans of WW2 fiction who don't mind very honest story telling. And I would recommend following it up with some thing a little lighter.

Waiting on Wednesday ~ Keepers of the Covenant

Today I am linking up with Breaking the Spine for Waiting on Wednesday. This is a chance to feature an up coming release that I am anxiously anticipating.This week's book is Keepers of the Covenant by Lynn Austin.

 

Why I'm waiting?
Lynn Austin is my favorite author, and she rarely disappoints. Although I didn't love the first book in this series, I still have high hopes for this installment.

What I'm Reading

It's time for some "twitterature" book review's. Here is my end-of-the-summer reading list.

I heard really great things about this book, and I wasn't disappointed. It is a lovely story about the power of art and music in the middle of all of the ugliness of war. The modern day love story was a little sappy and convienient, but that didn't detract from how wonderful the historical story was. I loved it.

There is so much grace and redemption in this book. This was a re-read for me, and I loved it just as much the second time around.


I have read the other books in this series and enjoyed them all. They are funny and easy to read, and will put a smile on your face. They follow a pastor's family that lives in a small Texas town named Fred. The story is told from the son's point of view. As a minister's wife there is so much to relate to. I love this series.

What I read In August

I had a great reading month in August. I read eight books which is pretty good for me. Participating in the Bout of Books read-a-thon was a big motivator. I also did the Tyndale summer reading program and won some free books through that. Here are my August reads:


The Lynn Austin books were re-reads for me. I think I enjoyed Wonderland Creek more this time around than the first time I read it. I was a little disappointed in Revolutionary. My favorite of the month was The Antelope in the Livingroom. So funny. What have you been reading lately?
